Firkins
explored the art of dry point shortly after teaching himself
to draw. Printmaking
may be purely a studio art to many artists, but it wasn’t
to Firkins. As with the bulk of his work, he created the
plates for his etchings on the spot. He took his simple etching
tools into diners (hence the title "Eat") and other
locations he had haunted when teaching himself to draw. There
he sketched directly from life on copper plates with a diamond
point stylus. These plates were used to make the prints in
this show during a few sessions in 1989, when he had access
to an intaglio press.
